Learn about the importance of student engagement with Migration and Displacement Studies from Matthew Brill-Carlat (Vassar College ’19 and former Coordinator for Research and Pedagogy at the Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement, and Education).

For Students

See here for more information on Vassar Refugee Solidarity (VRS) and the work of the Selective Bibliography of Forced Migration.

To learn more about these projects (as well as additional current and ongoing projects) and how to get involved, please email Sam Cavagnolo, Coordinator for Research and Pedagogy at the Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement, and Education.

For Faculty

The Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement, and Education (CFMDE) supports innovative new semester or year-long projects that further CFMDE’s goal of developing a forced migration studies curriculum (see CFMDE Mission). Students and faculty/staff at Bard, Bennington, Sarah Lawrence, and Vassar colleges may apply for funding to launch new pilot initiatives that can produce sustainable projects.

Some successful project proposal categories submitted by students include:

  • A thesis project on forced migration that blends scholarship and advocacy
  • Student-led initiatives around forced migration that combine the efforts of multiple CFMDE campuses
  • A student-organized panel on, for example, Immigration and Incarceration

Recipients are expected to write a brief report to their school’s Faculty Director after the term of grant funding ends. Recipients of grant awards are also expected to attend the subsequent CFMDE workshop or Teaching Lab (May 2020 at Sarah Lawrence College) to present their work and enrich our shared conversation. They are also encouraged to report on their findings in the journal EuropeNow.

Please note that CFMDE is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which does not support international student travel, the digitization of library archives, overhead/indirect costs, tuition, or financial aid. Direct disbursement of funds to refugees, forced migrants, or others outside CFMDE colleges is not permitted.

For more information and guidelines, please contact Sam Cavagnolo, Coordinator for Research and Pedagogy at the Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement, and Education.
